The term “non-surgical hair replacement” refers to most forms of hair replacement using natural
or simulated hair pieces or wigs. Men and women alike choose this option for treating moderate to severe hair
loss caused by a variety of conditions and circumstances, including androgenetic
alopecia ( pattern baldness or hair thinning ) and other alopecias, hair
loss arising from ingestion of toxic drugs ( e.g., chemotherapy ), and other causes.
| Hair Piece |
|
A hair piece can be used by men ( to cover a bald spot ) or women ( usually to cover a larger
area ). It is usually a custom-made item of variable size consisting of a foundation made of netting or
silicone, attached using clips or adhesives to the area affected by hair loss, with each individual hair
carefully and individually set in place. The hair piece may be removed by the wearer at any time. If you
are considering purchasing a hair piece, it is advisable to buy two, so that you can alternate while one
is being cleaned. Also, try to buy hair pieces made of color-matched, human hair for a more natural effect.

| Hair System |
|
An oddly misleading term, the “hair system”
is actually quite similar to a hair piece, except that
it must be removed by a professional ( i.e., not the wearer
) and remains on the head for several weeks at a time.
The advantage that hair systems have over hair pieces
is that most have a more natural appearance and are largely
undetectable. |
| Toupee |
|
Basically an old-fashioned term for a man’s hair
piece, used to cover a bald spot and/or a receding ( or
vanished ) hairline. |
| Wig |
|
Very similar to a hair piece, a wig may also have additional supports in the form of clips, adhesives
or straps for extra staying power. Wigs are more often the solution of choice for men and women undergoing
chemotherapy. |
| Scarves and Hats |
|
Many women prefer to cover up with an attractive scarf, hat or turban, rather than investing in a wig
or hairpiece – particularly if their hair loss is likely to be temporary.
